1 Ferula asafoetida: Traditional uses and pharmacological activity Ferula asafoetida is herbaceous plant of the umbelliferae family. It is oleo gum resin obtained from the rhizome and root of plant. This spice is used as a digestive aid, in food as a condiment and in pickles. It is used in modern herbalism in the treatment of hysteria, some nervous conditions, bronchitis, asthma and whooping cough. It was at one time employed in the treatment of infantile pneumonia and flatulent colic. The gum resin is antispasmodic, carminative, expectorant, laxative, and sedative. The volatile oil in the gum is eliminated through the lungs, making this an excellent treatment for asthma. The odor of asafoetida is imparted to the breath, secretions, flatus, and gastric eructations. Its properties are antispasmodic, expectorant, stimulant, emmenagogue and vermifuge. Asafoetida has also been used as a sedative. It also thins the blood and lowers blood pressure. It is widely used in India in food and as a medicine in Indian systems of medicine like ayurveda. Asafoetida has been held in great esteem among indigenous medicines, particularly in Unani system from the earliest times.
2 Pharmacological activities and therapeutic uses of resins obtained from Ferula asafoetida Linn.: A Review erula asafoetida Linn. is a chief source of Asafoetida, a sturdy, obstinate and sulfurous odor, and oleo-gum-resin of medicinal and nutritional significance. Asafoetida is used in food as a flavoring agent and also has been used as traditional medicine for many diseases in the world. Recent studies have shown numerous promising activities mostly muscle relaxant, memory enhancing, digestive enzyme, antioxidant, antispasmodic, hypotensive, hepatoprotective, antiviral, antifungal, anticancer, anxiolytics, and anthelmintic activities. It is used in the prevention and treatment of several problems such as unwanted abortion, unusual pain, sterility, and mainly ailment for women such as difficult and excessive menstruation and leukorrhea. Moreover, it is used for stomach pressure, flatulence, low acid levels in the stomach, and loose stools. This review deals with study of various phytoconstituents, pharmacological, and therapeutic effects of Asafoetida.
3 Evaluation of the effect of Ferula asafoetida Linn. gum extract on learning and memory in Wistar rats Extract produced significant improvement in memory score i.e. step through latency at 400 mg/kg dose in passive avoidance model (P< 0.05) and dose-dependent improvement of transfer latency in elevated plus maze model (P< 0.001). Dose-dependent inhibition of brain cholinesterase (P< 0.001) and significant improvement in antioxidant levels (P< 0.05) were also noted.
Memory enhancing potential of F. foetida can be attributed to acetylcholinesterase inhibiting and antioxidant properties. Hence, dietary usage of F. foetida is beneficial and can also be employed as an adjuvant to existing anti-dementia therapies.
4 Antispasmodic and hypotensive effects of Ferula asafoetida gum extract Ferula asafoetida gum extract (0.3–2.2 mg/100 g body weight) significantly reduced the mean arterial blood pressure in anaesthetised rats. It might be concluded that the relaxant compounds in Ferula asafoetida gum extract interfere with a variety of muscarinic, adrenergic and histaminic receptor activities or with the mobilisation of calcium ions required for smooth muscle contraction non-specificly.
5 Antioxidant and antihaemolytic activities of
Ferula foetida regel (Umbelliferae)
This study showed remarkable
antioxidant and antihemolytic activities in Ferula
foetida. Biological effects may be attributed to
the presence of phenols and flavonoids in the
extract. It is very promising for further biochemical experiments
6 Safety and Efficacy of Ferula asafoetida in Functional Dyspepsia: A Randomized, Double-Blinded, Placebo-Controlled Study In the double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, 43 subjects diagnosed to have moderate to severe discomforts of nonulcer FD were randomized to receive hard-shell capsules (250 mg × 2/day) of either placebo (n=22) or a food-grade formulation of asafoetida (Asafin) (n=21) for 30 days. When evaluated by a set of validated indexing tools (GSRS, GDSS, and NDI), almost 81% in the Asafin group showed significant (p < 0.01) improvement in the overall score and quality of life as compared to the placebo. At the end of the study, 66% of subjects in the Asafin group remained symptoms-free. Although the symptoms score improved significantly in both the groups (from -5.67 to -25.29 in Asafin group versus -1.55 to -6.0 in the placebo; p ≤ 0.001), the relative percentage of subjects in the Asafin group with more than 80% reduction in various symptoms were: bloating (58%), appetite (69%), postprandial fullness (74%) motion sickness (75%), and digestion (77%) as compared to less than 10% nonspecific improvement in the placebo group. All the subjects remained safe with no adverse events or variations in haematological and biochemical parameters. The study was registered at http://ctri.nic.in/ (CTRI/2018/ 01/011149).
7 Antibacterial activity of Ferula asafoetida: a comparison of red and
white type
Plant extracts have great potential as antimicrobial
compounds against microorganisms. Thus, they can be used in the
treatment of diseases caused by microbes. From our studies, we
conclude that extracts of F. assafoetida demonstrated activity
against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. However,
enterobacters were found to be more susceptible. Organic extracts
has shown stronger activity in comparison to aqueous extracts.
F. assafoetida has broad-spectrum antibacterial activity because it
showed the good inhibitory potential against the tested strains of
bacteria. This confirms its use as a health remedy in folklore
medicine. Bioactive substances from this plant can therefore be
employed in the formulation of antimicrobial agents for the
treatment of various bacterial infection mainly related to the
.
digestive system. Isolation, identification and purification of theses
phyto-constituents from more pure components of F. assafoetida
and determination of their respective antimicrobial potencies and
toxicological evaluation with the view to formulating novel
chemotherapeutic agents can be the future direction for
investigation.
