1 Unlocking the Potential of Citrus medica L.: Antioxidant Capacity and Phenolic Profile across Peel, Pulp, and Seeds In conclusion, the pulp and peel of Citrus medica L. are the fractions of citrus fruits with the highest antioxidant capacity and phenolic compounds. Comparing the antioxidant capacity and individual phenolic compounds, the results indicate that flavonoids were the main phenolic compounds responsible for the antioxidant capacity since the pulp was the fraction with the highest flavonoids content and with the highest antioxidant capacity. Flavanones were the main class of flavonoids in pulp and albedo. In addition, the maturity state influences the composition of phenolic compounds of flavedo, with a decrease in the phenolic acid content and a shift in the major flavonoid from rutin to sakuranetin.
2 Citrus medica: nutritional, phytochemical composition and health benefits – a review Citrus medica (Citron) is an underutilized fruit plant having various bioactive components in all parts of the plant. The major bioactive compounds present are iso-limonene, citral, limonene, phenolics, flavonones, vitamin C, pectin, linalool, decanal, and nonanal, accounting for several health benefits. Pectin and heteropolysachharides also play a major role as dietary fibers. The potential impact of citron and its bioactive components to prevent or reverse destructive deregulated processes responsible for certain diseases has attracted different researchers’ attention. The fruit has numerous nutraceutical benefits, proven by pharmacological studies; for example, anti-catarrhal, capillary protector, anti-hypertensive, diuretic, antibacterial, antifungal, anthelmintic, antimicrobial, analgesic, strong antioxidant, anticancerous, antidiabetic, estrogenic, antiulcer, cardioprotective, and antihyperglycemic. The present review explores new insights into the benefits of citron in various body parts. Throughout the world, citron has been used in making carbonated drinks, alcoholic beverages, syrup, candied peels, jams, marmalade, cordials, and many other value added products, which suggests it is an appropriate raw material to develop healthy processed food. In the present review, the fruit taxonomical classification, beneficial phytochemicals, antioxidant activities, and health benefits are discussed.
3 A Review on Phytochemical and Pharmacological Properties of Citrus medica Linn Result shows that Citrus
medica Linn. possesses analgesic, hypoglycaemic, anticholinesterase, anticancer, antidiabetic,
hypocholesterolemic, hypolipidemic, insulin Secretagogue, anthelmintic, antimicrobial antiulcer and
estrogenic properties. The mechanisms of action for these properties are not fully understood. Preliminary
studies have found various constituents of Citrus medica exhibiting a variety of therapeutic effects. These
results are very encouraging and indicate this herb should be studied more extensively to confirm these
results and reveal other potential therapeutic effects. Clinical trials using Citrus medica for a variety of
conditions should also be conducted.
4 Citrus medica essential oil exhibits significant antimicrobial and antiproliferative activity Both C. medica essential oil and limonene were effective against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Escherichia coli, Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella Enteritidis, Salmonella Typhimurium, Pseudomonas fragi, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Aspergillus niger. MIC and MBC values for the oil ranged 845 ± 26–2008 ± 43 mg/l and 4184–8368 mg/l, respectively. C. medica essential oil was further assessed in different human cancer cell lines (HepG2, Caco2, MCF-7, and THP-1) and was found to have significant antiproliferative activity, being the most effective against the Caco2 cells. Citrus medica oil and limonene were shown to possess cancer-specific activity when tested against the skin melanoma A375 cells and normal skin cells (HaCat). The oil also appeared to inhibit LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW 264.7 cells.
5 Antibacterial Activity and Mechanisms of Essential Oil from Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis In this work, antibacterial activity of finger citron essential oil (FCEO, Citrus medica L. var. sarcodactylis) and its mechanism against food-borne bacteria were evaluated. A total of 28 components in the oil were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, in which limonene (45.36%), γ-terpinene (21.23%), and dodecanoic acid (7.52%) were three main components. For in vitro antibacterial tests, FCEO exhibited moderately antibacterial activity against common food-borne bacteria: Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis and Micrococcus luteus. It showed a better bactericidal effect on Gram-positive bacteria than Gram-negative. Mechanisms of the antibacterial action were investigated by observing changes of bacteria morphology according to scanning electron microscopy, time-kill analysis, and permeability of cell and membrane integrity. Morphology of tested bacteria was changed and damaged more seriously with increased concentration and exposure time of FCEO. FCEO showed a significant reduction effect on the growth rate of surviving bacteria and lead to lysis of the cell wall, intracellular ingredient leakage, and consequently, cell death.
6 Estrogenic activity of Citrus medica L. leaves growing in Egypt The estrogenic activity of petroleum ether extract of Citrus medica L. leaves as well as the chemical constituents responsible for the biological activity was studied. The petroleum ether extract proved to retain high estrogenic activity in immature female rats. The extract was saponified and its components (saponifiable part 23% and the unsaponifiable matter 77%) were identified using GC/MS technique. The extract proved to be safe (LD50 < 2g/kg.bw). Oral administration of petroleum ether extract of C. medica in ovariectomized immature female Wistar rats for 7 days in a dose of 400 mg/kg resulted in significant increase in the uterine weight (g) (1.7±0.11) when compared with ovariectomized control rats (1.3±0.07). GC/MS analysis of both saponifiable and unsaponifiable matters revealed the presence of thirty three components (28 hydrocarbons and 5 sterols) in the unsaponifiable fraction, the major hydrocarbon was n-Heneicosane (16.7%) while the major sterol was β-sitosterol (4.03%) and 15 components in the saponifiable matter it's major component was hexadecanoic acid (19.93%). As a conclusion petroleum ether extract of Citrus medica L. leaves possess a significant estrogenic activity.
7 Citrus for wellness: Exploring the bioactive properties of Citrus
medica fruit peel with emphasis on its anticancer, antioxidant,
antimicrobial and anthelmintic properties
The current study investigated the biological properties of Citron fruit peel extract. As an underutilised plant rich in numerous phytochemicals with various advantageous properties, C. medica comprises bioactive compounds demonstrating antimicrobial, antioxidant, anthelmintic
and anticancer activities. Naturally synthesised bioactive compounds, as seen in the study, offer better efficacy and
bioavailability compared to their synthetic or allopathic counterparts, with the added benefits of showing minimal
toxicity humans/ animals and the environment. The fruit peel extract of C. medica, as evidenced by the GCMS chromatogram, contains a variety of phytochemical compounds contributing to its antibacterial, anthelmintic, antioxidant and anticancer properties. Therefore, C. medica stands out as a rich source of phytocompounds, making it a potential candidate for further exploration of
its cytotoxic and antioxidant properties in a sustainable manner.Citrus flavonoids have been reported to have inhibitory effects against a range of cancer types, including breast, rectal, lung, liver, uterine, ovarian, prostrate and gastric cancer. These compounds have demonstrated the
ability to prevent cancer cell proliferation, migration, angiogenesis and induction of apoptosis .
