The ethanolic extract exhibited pronounced anabolic effects in treated animals, as evidenced by gains in the body and reproductive organ weights. Increased spermatogenesis due to treatment with extracts was also witnessed in transverse section. The treatment further markedly affected sexual behaviour of the animals, as reflected by the reduction of ML, increase in MF and enhanced attractability towards females. A significant increase in the sperm count as well as fructose levels of seminal vesicles was noted. |

Asteracantha longifolia (L.) Nees, Acanthaceae, is a source of the ayurvedic drug,'Kokilaaksha'and the Unani drug, Talimakhana. The seeds are acrid, bitter, aphrodisiac, tonic, sedative, used for diseases of the blood. The plant is known to possess antitumor, hypoglycemic, aphrodisiac, antibacterial, free radical scavenging and lipid peroxidation, hepatoprotective and haematopoietic activity. It contains lupeol, stigmasterol, butelin, fatty acids, and alkaloids. |

Haematopoietic Activity of Asteracantha longifolia Asteracantha longifolia on Cyclophosphamide Cyclophosphamide-induced Bone Marrow |
A significant increase in the number of bone marrow cells and α-esterase cells observed in A. longifolia treated group compared to cyclophosphamide alone treated animals indicate the ability of A. longifolia to enhance the proliferation of stem cells. These investigations validate the use of the leaves of this plant for haematopoietic activity in Indian system of medicine. |

| 4 | Effect of Asteracantha longifolia on haematological parameters in rats |
In rats, CP has a bone marrow suppressive effect and induces aplastic anaemia. CP treatment (3 mg/kg, body weight, i.p.) resulted in the significant lowering of haematological parameters on the seventh day. All the haematological indices were restored to almost normal counts after continuous administration of the extract. These investigations validate the use of the leaves of this plant, in the Indian system of medicine, for haematopoietic activity. In the present work, we have not studied the toxic effects caused by the extract. We aimed at investigating the haematopoietic activity of the plant extract and the results of the present study lead to the conclusion that A. longifolia has great potential as a haematopoietic agent. |

| 7 | Anti-tumor promoting activity of Asteracantha longifolia against experimental hepatocarcinogenesis in rats | Treatment of rats with doses 200 and 400 mg/kg body weight of methanol extract of A. longifolia seeds on alternate days, subsequent to carcinogen treatment, for 6 weeks significantly reduced the incidence and size distribution of γ-GT-positive foci and tumor formation.
